The My Story in Words Manifesto - What we stand for and how we will get there

That is our core belief and a driving force behind what we do.
That is why we created My Story in Words.
A bit of background
During the 2020 lockdown, Helen and Rob’s parents started writing and sharing their life stories. It gave them a sense of purpose and brought a lot of pleasure to the whole family. It also helped Helen and Rob see the value of such activities. Feeling inspired, they decided to make My Story in Words.
What is My Story in Words?
It is an online guided service that helps people record their stories. It is accessible and easy-to-use - regardless of background, affluence, or ability, everyone deserves a chance to write their story.
Who is My Story in Words for?
In short, everyone. But there are two main strands where our focus lies:
- You have likely seen first-hand people and their stories disappear through illness or death. We don’t want that to happen. Often people regret not asking their loved ones more questions. It feels like there’s always ‘another time’ until suddenly there isn’t. My Story in Words is a brilliant way to start those conversations. You can get to know a relative or friend even better by helping them through their My Story journey.
- You might be someone who wants to tell their story but doesn’t know how to. Writing stories down can feel very different to telling them in person. We designed My Story in Words with collaboration in mind so that family and friends can get involved and help out. After all, the process of writing your story should be fun! It should also be hassle-free, which is why we’ve written over 150 prompts to jog memories and get you started.
A legacy
My Story in Words is part autobiography, part memoir, and part living archive. Whatever you want to call it, the important thing is that it’s your story. It’s a legacy of your life that you, your family, and your friends can enjoy and come back to for years to come.
